Almost Home

Published by admin at 2:53 pm under The Land Of Misfit Posts

For the last two weeks Phil and I have been sleeping on an air mattress, cooking with one pan, using paper plates and plastic utensils. Yesterday nearly a month after they left New York, our things arrived filling our tiny apartment to the rafters. I want to take this opportunity to apologize to you all for the lack of pictures from the road as my computer has just been located after a long tedious excavation and my Internet has yet to be established*. I am posting this from my parents computer and she does not have the programs I need to get the job done. I promise that in the coming weeks I will have full reports on everything from my mother in-laws amazing Lithuanian cooking, fiddle-head ferns, saussion d’Avignon, watermelon radishes and the elderly Frenchman who is my new wine merchant. After two weeks of having nothing to do but poke my head into neighborhood shops I am starting to get my bearings and am looking forward to sharing my experiences with you.

 See you next week!

Thank you for visiting!

Erin

*Note to self: Quit screwing around and get a laptop already!

I loved the month we spent waiting for our household goods to arrive. I loved the empty apartment with just a fridge, a bed(which doubled as couch and bed) and the out door table (inside). I bought a cheap 4 piece dinner setting, cutlery set, 6 wine glasses, 1 frypan, 1 stove top casserole, 1 knife and a wooden spoon. All from Ikea. I think I could live a very simple life as long as I had a nice bathroom.

    Barbara,
I feel exactly the same way. As much as I wanted my things, I was sad to see my simple existence go. We have been working hard and our life will return to normal soon.

    “I loved…waiting for our household goods…”
    “I loved the empty…”

“As much as I wanted my things, I was sad to see my simple existence go.”

Surely there’s a compromise that can be reached! I just read the other day about a man who’s trying to keep his possesions to 100.

I’m thinking I could even just halve what I have, still have too much.

The sad part of it all is that we gave away half of our posessions before we moved and still had too much. We have been giving away our things left and right this week trying to make 610sq. ft. work. It is working though and if the moving company would just come back to recycle the packing material we’d actually have quite a bit of space!

Good luck with settling in. Moving is hard.
